1 Brush for two full mintues
, twice a day. I know this sounds cliché, but it is the best defense.
2 It is important to use toothpaste with fluoride. Almost all major toothpaste brands contain fluoride.
3 See your dentist regularly. Regular visits twice a year will reduce the chance of pain and larger issues later on.
4 Apply individual sealants on teeth as they come in. Sealants don't take the place of proper brushing, but they will dramatically reduce the chances for cavities.
5 Parents should have their teeth checked as well. Parents can pass the bacteria that causes cavities to children.

Why is it important to have childrens' teeth checked? Cavities are caused by a bacteria that feed on sugar. This bacteria produces acid, and it is that acid that destroys enamel and demineralizes teeth. Detecting and treating cavities will reduce pain and discomfort. Good dental health will aid eating, speech development and maintain a healthy environment for permanent teeth.

Does prevention work? Over the last 20 years, the percentage of children with cavities in permanent teeth decreased more than 57 percent. Healthy smiles mean happy kids.
